Yoane Wissa interviewed by JoelBeyaTV:
Joel Beya: “You take on the number 9 shirt, how proud were you when you first arrived in the city of Newcastle?”
Yoane Wissa: “I am still proud now. I still, sometimes I still don’t believe I am here. When you are waiting for something so long, so deep, and you pray every single day that it will happen. I’m still waking up from my dream because this kind of team you watch when you were young, then to be there…you need to work hard. The number 9 [at Newcastle United] is something crazy. It is an iconic number and for sure I need to work hard to show that I am proud to wear this number.”
Joel Beya: “It has not been easy with the injuries, how have you managed that this season?”
Yoane Wissa: “It was really hard, really really hard, because no pre-season. Then going to play with the national team and unlucky, injured. It is a game, it happens with a lot of footballers. When you come back from injury…but I didn’t wait the proper time [to come back from injury] if I am honest with you. It should have been more. It should have definitely been more. When I first saw all the guys, I was already injured. The link-up with the players. In pre-season you have a lot of friendlies, to make mistakes and to say to the guy ‘try this, try this, try this’ and that is what I missed. Getting injured…you just want to catch the train [and start playing as quickly as possible], but that was impossible because my knee wasn’t right. I knew that but it is such a privilege to be there [at Newcastle United], when I look back…maybe I should have taken more time, but I’m in Newcastle and I just want to wear the shirt.”
Yoane Wissa adding: “I am just a soldier. I will keep going. I want the fans to know the love I have for this shirt. Looking forward to next season, I understand how big this club is, I hope I’m going to do better. It’s such a privilege. I just want to wear the shirt.”
Here’s hoping both Yoane Wissa and Newcastle United can now look forward to better times ahead.
