Interesting comments from this BBC Sport pundit on Newcastle United.

Chris Sutton speaking as United prepare to play their eighth match of the 2026/27 season.

Newcastle United up against Coventry City in the Premier League.

An  8pm kick-off on Monday night.

Matthias Jaissle hoping to see his team pick up another win against a promoted club as Premier League football returns after a 23 day break for both teams.

Newcastle United having picked up a hard fought victory over Hull City despite having nine players ruled out due to injury, many of them experienced key individuals.

The BBC Sport pundit declaring ahead of Monday night: “Newcastle are an exciting watch with the way they set about games and have so much pace in their team, but I don’t think they have much control of matches.”

I would agree with most of that. However, with so many big players having been injured, Matthias Jaissle has undoubtedly had to make far more use of young inexperienced players so early after they have arrived in a new country and stepping up to a far higher level league.

Chris Sutton adding: “This feels like a great opportunity for Coventry to follow up their first win of the season with another positive result. Beating Nottingham Forest last time out was such a massive result for the Sky Blues – but can they back it up with another victory? I am not sure they will. A draw feels like the obvious result to me.”

Coventry City made a terrible start to the season when losing all four Premier League games, conceding ten goals and scoring none. I think they carried little luck in those early matches and aren’t as bad as they looked.

However, when you scrape the surface of that 1-0 win at Forest in their most recent game, it certainly appears they carried the luck that day. Forest dominated and Coventry City got away with one, they only had three shots on target, two corners and 13 touches of the ball in the Forest penalty area. A bit of a smash and grab.

With Newcastle United having far more options and a stronger bench, I fancy this to be another United win. Chris Sutton got it wrong when predicting Newcastle would only draw 1-1 with Hull and is now forecasting the same against Coventry. Here’s hoping Matthias Jaissle and his players will prove the BBC Sport pundit wrong again.
