United were by far the better team in the first three-quarters of this St James’ Park clash.

However, the final quarter of the match saw Hull take over and Newcastle United had to really battle to see out the win.

Matthias Jaissle definitely deserved the three points on the game overall but if you don’t score the number of goals you should do when in control, you leave yourself open to the possibility of throwing the win away.

Two up after seven minutes and creating plenty of other chances and good situations, Newcastle should have been at least three or four ahead. A huge moment when Yoane Wissa’s penalty was saved just before half-time.

With so many young players in the squad due to the injury situation, Matthias Jaissle had so few options on the bench. Steur and Fernandez-Pardo forced off as they cramped up and any number of other players looked knackered and could have been taken off, if Newcastle hadn’t had nine or more players unavailable.

Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle heaped praise on his side’s gutsy performance – and positive start to the season overall – after the 2-1 victory against Hull.

Brutal honesty from the United boss, he is speaking with the kind of honesty we always used to see from Eddie Howe and is such a rarity in the Premier League these days.

Matthias Jaissle: “It was a tough match. We wanted to show a reaction after Leeds and we did it at a really high level in the first half, probably the best one so far in the season, we could have killed the game. If we scored a third goal I think that would have been much, much easier than in the second half.”

Matthias Jaissle asked about the nerves on and off the pitch in the later stages: “That is maybe a trauma from the past that has stuck, I hope we can change that mindset. The players have told me already that these games maybe would have ended in a different result. We tried to change this narrative, the belief also, hopefully you can feel that in the next weeks and months that if something goes wrong, we are energised in a positive way. With a young squad, this is especially important.”

The United boss adding: “We need to be honest, there were many changes along the way, we have nine players injured and that didn’t help in the second half when Hull was bringing everything in our box, but I’m so proud. Big, big, big, respect, and we are so happy to take the three points.”

Matthias Jaissle asked about how relentless Hull were: “Yes, but we were too. I think that it is a really good start to the season after what happened in the summer. In this transition phase and with all the circumstances around, it has been a really good summer, now it is time to reflect, to relax a bit, to get many players back after the break and we go again.”

Matthias Jaissle asked about the goals from Lewis Hall and Joe Willock: “It is unbelievable that we can count on these two players for the start of the season, hopefully they can continue like this.”
