Leicester City are now on the precipice of doing a Sunderland, it is looking inevitable.
Sunderland went from the Premier League to League One in the space of two seasons (2016/17 and 2018/19).
Now Leicester City are going to do the same.
If the Foxes don’t win tonight at home to Hull City then they will be relegated in front of their own fans.
Reality is though that Leicester City are going to be relegated regardless, they need to win all of their remaining last three games and so many results involving other clubs to also go their way.
When you realise that the 2015/16 Premier League champions have only won one of their last 17 Championship matches, they are clearly doomed.
Former Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles moved to Leicester on 3 February 2026 to try and help save them from the drop. In the 14 games that have followed, only one win, which came against Bristol City. Jamaal Lascelles was an unused sub that day and Leicester have failed to win any of the eight games where he has featured, the 32-year-old playing the full game on Saturday when Leicester City lost at Portsmouth (see image above).
Leicester City have won only 17 of their 81 league matches these past two seasons, six in the Premier League and now 11 so far in this Championship campaign. They ended up third bottom last season in the top tier and are currently second bottom of the second tier.
You have to hand it to Sunderland though who it will be very difficult for any team to match, in that they won only 13 of 84 league matches across the 2016/17 and 2017/18 seasons, six in the Premier League when they finished rock bottom (in 2016/17) and then only seven in the Championship (in 2017/18) when they once again propped up all of the other clubs.
For Leicester City fans it is all the more painful when only a decade ago they were crowned Premier League champions. The following (2016/17) season they then got to the quarter-finals of the Champions League, whilst as recently as 2019/20 the Foxes finished fifth in the Premier League, then did the same in 2020/21 AND won the FA Cup that season as well.
Whilst the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City appear able to avoid any points deductions, any real punishment, for their breaking of the rules and/or alleged breaking of the rules, Leicester City find themselves this season with their consecutive relegations now all but guaranteed due to a points deduction.
For overspending in recent years, Leicester City have been punished with a six points deduction. This has made it eight points adrift of safety with three games to go, without the points deduction they would have been only two points away from safety. That recently announced confirmation of a points deduction was surely the final death knell, removing any confidence and hope. The Foxes had actually lost only one of their last six matches but after their appeal against the points deduction was announced on 8 April 2026, Leicester City have lost both matches and failed to even score a goal.
