Sandro Tonali was forced off for Newcastle United due to injury in the Champions League match last Wednesday in Barcelona.
The midfielder then went for an MRI scan on the Thursday, with Eddie Howe on Friday saying that the scans suggested no major injury.
However, Sandro Tonali was not available for the matchday squad that faced Sunderland on Sunday.
With the World Cup play-offs fast approaching, Italy boss Gennaro Gattuso on Monday morning said: “Sandro Tonali will train with a low workload today.”
Thursday sees Italy face their World Cup play-off semi-final against Northern Ireland in Bergamo.
Ahead of that match, Football Italia have now reported that Sandro Tonali has ‘overcome the thigh issue sustained during Barcelona’s Champions League tie and trained with good intensity’ ahead of Thursday.
Football Italia stating that this is: ‘A timely boost for Gattuso in terms of Italy team news, who is counting on the Newcastle United midfielder to provide leadership alongside Barella in the engine room.’
If Italy get past Northern Ireland, they will then face Wales or Bosnia-Herzegovina, with the chance to be part of a 2026 World Cup finals group with Canada, Switzerland, and Qatar.
