Tuesday brought news from the Netherlands that Ajax had reached agreement with Newcastle United for the transfer of Sean Steur.
The exciting young midfielder having had a breakthrough 2025/26 season, becoming a regular in the Dutch club’s first team at the age of 17 and making 22 appearances in the last league campaign.
The now 18-year-old has played at every youth age group for the Netherlands up to and including the Under 19s.
Standing 6ft tall, De Telegraaf reported on Tuesday that the central midfielder had agreed a contract with Newcastle United until the end of June 2031.
Writing for De Telegraaf, Mike Verweij said on Tuesday morning: “It is striking that Sean Steur is closing the door on the Johan Cruijff ArenA after 26 matches for Ajax 1…After the mismanagement of recent years, Ajax has a limited war chest to strengthen the squad, and therefore the board is seeking additional funds on the transfer market. In that respect, the sale of Steur comes as a godsend….On the other hand, there is naturally the enormous sporting loss, as Steur is regarded as a mega-talent.”
Now today (Thursday 9 July) we have seen Newcastle United confirm Sean Steur has signed for NUFC.
A third summer signing with Newcastle United having already signed 20-year-olds Ewen Jaouen and Bazoumana Toure with the clear main emphasis is on signing young emerging talent from the continent this summer.
As usual, United stated ‘undisclosed transfer fee’ in their official announcement.
However, Ajax have made public how much Newcastle United have agreed to pay: ‘Sean Steur joins Newcastle United. Ajax and Newcastle United have reached an agreement on the transfer of Sean Steur to the English club. The 18-year-old midfielder was under contract with Ajax until June 30, 2028. Ajax will receive a transfer fee from Newcastle United that could amount to approximately € 27 million. Steur (Purmerend, January 11, 2008) joined the Ajax Youth Academy in 2016. He made his official first-team debut on February 16, 2025, in the match against Heracles Almelo. The midfielder went on to make 26 official appearances for Ajax’s first team, scoring once. Ajax has thanked Steur for his years in Amsterdam and wishes him every success with the next step in his career in the English Premier League.’
This very much fits in with what De Telegraaf reported on Tuesday morning.
De Telegraaf reported it as a €27m deal agreed, with €24m (£20.5m) to be paid as the initial transfer fee and then “easily achievable” future bonus payments of another €3m (£2.5m).
